Spring is in the air

There is nothing like springtime for athletics.  Excitement radiates around the baseball and softball fields, golf courses, tennis courts and on football practice fields.  This time of year reminds me of the song Pass It On.

It is always great to witness young people setting records, especially in track and field.  Records represent expertise in technique and athleticism.  Current records are usually very hard to beat because the records encompass many athletes and many years of the sport.

This announcer is begging for help over here

“Can you read this kid’s number?”, I ask in anguish. “No.” replies another press box worker. “Looks like..maybe... So, an athlete coming to bat doesn’t get announced, simply because your game announcer..me..can’t tell who he or she is.  Some will say..

ESPN needs to forget whip-around coverage

That’s what they’re calling it now.  If one team is pounding another in the NCAA basketball tournament, well...let’s cut out of this one and switch to another, tighter contest, the wheels at ESPN decide.  What about the viewers?  Don’t they count?

I saw you, Mystery Man

One Saturday morning as I was heading out to meet up with friends in Harker Heights, I glimpsed a man walking along the grass across the highway from Walmart.  He was wearing a golfing cap and carrying some grabbers to pick up trash. He walked slowly, with purpose, staring down at the grass.

Reward academic success

I am very impressed with how the CCISD coaches are guiding student-athletes for academic success.  It is a constant topic around the field house and athletic events.

What If?

Believe it or not, it’s hypothetically possible that this column could have simply never happened. There was a chain of events that led to it existing, and had even one link in the chain been removed, things could have ended very, very differently.

How to not make the news

In a community like ours, sometimes it’s feast or famine when it comes to the news. My phone’s calendar has plenty of blue “specks” which tell me I have news-related event coming up.
