Police identify man arrested for July 16 murder in Copperas Cove

A 31-year-old Killeen man has been identified as the suspect arrested in Thursday morning’s shooting of a 29-year-old Copperas Cove woman. 

L'Michael Detron Amos was arrested on Thursday by Killeen police after a search began for the man who shot Sholonda Shanice Dixon.

According to Copperas Cove police, at approximately 12:28 a.m. Thursday, July 16, officers were dispatched to the 700 block of Constitution Dr in. reference to a reported shooting.

Upon arrival, they located a 29-year-old female suffering from a gunshot wound and immediately began life-saving measures until personnel from Copperas Cove EMS arrived. However, Dixon succumbed to her injuries. A witness identified Amos as the shooter, who was known to Dixon, and the witness also provided officers with a description of his vehicle. 

The information was immediately broadcast to surrounding law enforcement agencies. 

Officers with the Killeen Police Department located Amos and took him into custody. Amos was arraigned before Bell County Justice of the Peace Judge Larry Wilkey on July 17, who set bond at $1,250,000 on the charge of Murder.

“The Copperas Cove Police Department offers its deepest sympathies to Ms. Dixon's family and loved ones as they mourn her loss,” stated Lt. Krystal Baker with the Copperas Cove Police Department in a media update on Monday morning. 

“The Copperas Cove Police Department would like to thank the Killeen Police Department for their assistance in the swift apprehension of the suspect. Their partnership and coordinated response were instrumental in bringing this incident to a quick resolution. This investigation remains active and ongoing.”
