Coryell County Judge Roger Miller has submitted his letter of resignation amid discussions of the county’s budget and tax rate for the upcoming fiscal year.
The letter was submitted to the County Attorney, the County Treasurer and the Commissioners Court on Monday, Sept. 14, to be accepted by the court by the close of business that same day.
In the letter, Miller stated his resignation is due to “personal and professional” circumstances making it difficult for him to perform his duties.
“After careful reflection, I have concluded that stepping aside is the right course of action for the Court, for the County, and for me,” Miller wrote.
In the meantime, while a successor has not been named, Miller said he will continue to act as the County Judge in a holdover capacity until the Commissioners Court selects his successor.
Miller also wrote that he would “support an orderly transition and assist the Court in any reasonable way it directs.”
Miller also stated that he has already notified the County Treasurer to halt any payments that he would receive for the position, such as prospective pay, allowances and other compensations applicable.
“This decision has not been an easy one, and I regret that my service is concluding under these circumstances,” Miller wrote. “I believe, however, that it is warranted and in the best interest of the citizens of Coryell County.
“For the past seven-and-a-half years, through good times and difficult ones, I have been grateful for the support of this Court and the people we serve together,” Miller stated. “There is much we should take pride in having accomplished, and much important work that remains.”
Miller had less than four months remaining in office until Rob Erwin is sworn in as the new County Judge on Jan. 1, 2027. Erwin won the May runoff election on the Republican ticket, and there was no Democratic candidate running.
There has been no official designation of the interim County Judge at this time, with many speculating whether Erwin will be able to take office early.
County Attorney stated that the Commissioners Court will have an item on its agenda for the Sept. 22 meeting regarding appointing an interim judge.
