Tough cookies don’t crumble. That’s the slogan printed on shirts and bags available from Tough Cookie Fitness and it rang true at the Tough Cookie Duathlon held Sunday morning at Copperas Cove’s South Park near Martin Walker Elementary School.

Before the race even started, CC Rowe was facing a dilemma. She had come up from Austin and 30 minutes before the event began, realized she had two left shoes. They were the same color, size and model. One was an older pair and one was newer. Luckily, she was able to borrow an extra pair of shoes from a friend that fit perfectly and managed to come in 6th place overall. She had participated in five or six Tough Cookie Duathlons, she said, but this was a first for her.

The Tough Cookie Duathlon has been happening in Copperas Cove since 2004, according to race director and Tough Cookie Fitness founder Tzatsil Lemair. This year had the smallest number of participants, with about 40 women participating in the duathlon or 5K race. The previous two years, the bike portion was canceled due to bad weather, and Lemair believed that this led to a lower turnout.
