From the Vault: '59, '69, '79

To commemorate the 125th year of publication of the Copperas Cove Leader-Press in 2019, every Friday the Leader-Press will share snippets from the community’s history over the past 60 years in From the Vault.

40 years ago, in the Copperas Cove Leader
Students were said to “thrive” in the Gifted and Talented class at Cove’s Avenue E Elementary School. The program was first called to life in the 1977/78 school year, under the direction of Jack Ayres, with a total of 73 students in the program. 
The Band Boosters sponsored a Beauty Pageant, with Jana Thompson winning Miss Fourth Grade, Jenny Davis winning Miss Fifth Grade, and Becky Jernigan winning Miss Sixth Grade. 

50 years ago, in the Copperas Cove Press 
A total of 20 high school students represented Copperas Cove at the 1969 SMU Pep Squad and Drill Team School, among 800 other students from high schools and colleges in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana. 
A decoupage demonstration was set for July 22-24 at Copperas Cove High School, put on by the school’s homemaking department in cooperation with the Texas Education Agency.
 
60 years ago, in the Copperas Cove Courier
The Copperas Cove Quarterback Club was preparing to kick off the new football season with a meeting at the School House. 
New teachers for the Senior High School who are new to the Copperas Cove school system for the 1959-60 school year include Mrs. Ruth Averitt, teaching English; Mr. Monty Dewald, teaching science; Mrs. Hazel Baylor, who will teach Girls’ P.E.; and Miss Mancil, the new Homemaking teacher.
