Two people are dead after multiple collisions on the Highway 190 bypass Wednesday evening, when a driver attempted to pass in a no-passing zone.

In a statement released on Thursday afternoon, Lt. Krystal Baker with the Copperas Cove Police Department said at approximately 7:39 p.m., officers responded to a major crash involving multiple vehicles in the 700 block of U.S. Highway 190. Callers reported one of the vehicles was on fire.

“Preliminary investigation indicates the crash began when one vehicle attempted to pass in a no-passing zone at a high rate of speed, triggering a chain of collisions involving six vehicles,” Baker wrote. “The at-fault vehicle lost control and was struck by another traveling in the opposite direction.”

The driver and passenger of the at-fault vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene by Coryell County Justice of the Peace John Guinn.

Of the three injuries reported, one was transported by ambulance to a local hospital, another was flown by medical helicopter, and a third was treated at the scene and released to family.

“The names of the deceased are being withheld pending next of kin notifications. Those transported to area hospitals are reported to be in stable condition at this time. The investigation remains ongoing, and no further information is available at this time.

“Our thoughts are with all who were affected by this tragic incident.”

Other agencies assisting included the Coryell County Sheriff’s Office, the Texas Department of Public Safety, and the Fort Hood Criminal Investigation Division.
