The Copperas Cove community lost a more than 45-year volunteer when Earnest “Earnie” Remedies passed away on Monday, April 14.

The 87-year-old was a member of the Exchange Club of Copperas Cove for more than 45 years and was known for his work in the city and beyond.

In March 2022, Remedies was honored by the Exchange Club with a Lifetime Achievement Award, at the same time that the club celebrated its 50th anniversary of service in Copperas Cove. His family accepted his award on his behalf, as he was unable to attend.

The Lifetime Member Certificate is presented to members who have been a member of the Exchange Club for a certain number of years and the board must vote to bestow the award.

Remedies had “a faithful member for many, many, many years, and so we knew that this was something that would mean a lot to Earnie and Earnie’s family for his dedication to us,” said the late Ronnie Viss, who was president at that time.

In addition to serving locally with the club, Remedies also served at the district level.  Remedies was the Volunteer Field Representative (VFR) for the Texas District for many years. Part of that role was training Exchange Club members, and it was said of him that if anyone know Exchange Club, it was Earnie.

Remedies also served at the local, district and national levels within Exchange.

Remedies was also a longtime volunteer for Meals on Wheels from 1982 until several years ago.

In 2013, Remedies was honored as the 2013 Golden Deeds Award recipient for his volunteerism and dedication to making Copperas Cove and the surrounding areas a better place to live.

Remedies served 21 years in the United States Army, and at one point was the chairman and vice chairman of the Exchange Sunshine Home Corporation. He was instrumental in helping plan the Exchange Sunshine Home, as well as see that it was funded and built in Copperas Cove. The Sunshine Home provides income-based housing for senior citizens.

His volunteerism also extended to being the past director of the police and fire commission and an election judge and worker.

Remedies also received other awards in the past such the Who’s Who of Executives and Businessmen in 2002 and Hill Country Community Action Center Volunteer Award.

In Exchange, he earned the Exchangite of the Quarter Award, the Outstanding Club Treasurer Award, Outstanding District Director, District Exchangite and the New Club Building Award.

When receiving the Book of Golden Deeds award, Remedies at that time said it was a great honor to be presented with the award, and he attributed much of his success to the support he received from friends and family along with the fact that he enjoyed doing it.

“It’s just one of those things you just can’t say no to,” Remedies said.

A time of visitation will be held for Remedies on Monday, April 21 from 6-8 p.m. at Chisolm’s Family Funeral Home in Killeen.

A burial service will be held Tuesday, April 22, at 1 p.m. at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen.
