Young scientists got their hands dirty at Central Texas College as they stepped back in time through a hands-on fossil hunting experience. As part of CTC’s College for Kids summer program, students participated in an interactive course exploring Earth’s prehistoric past.

“We get to make awesome crafts which I love,” student Ewan said. “I am excited to learn a little more about fossils which I would love to learn more about them even though I already know a lot about them,” student Ewan said.

Using clay that students crafted and toy dinosaurs as models, students learned to identify fossils, understand how they form, and examine the unique geology of Central Texas. The engaging lesson turned complex scientific concepts into accessible, exciting discoveries for students ages 10 to 14.

“This class is about more than just fossils. It’s about sparking curiosity, encouraging exploration, and helping students connect with science in a meaningful way,” CTC Instructor Aide Chloe Ramos said. “It also helps students make friends, create connections, and just have fun learning.”

In addition to building scientific knowledge, the class promotes critical thinking, observation skills, and teamwork as students work together to uncover and interpret simulated fossil finds. The tactile learning approach supports multiple learning styles and makes science fun and memorable.

College for Kids offers a wide range of enrichment opportunities throughout the summer, designed to inspire and educate young learners across a variety of subjects from STEM to the arts to physical sports. CTC’s goal is to nurture lifelong learners by offering programs that are both educational and engaging, preparing students for academic success and future career exploration.
