Filing period for city council, school board elections ends Monday

Only a few days remain for the filing period for the Nov. 8 general election.

Three positions on the Copperas Cove city council, and three positions on the Copperas Cove Independent School District board of trustees are up for election.

A total of eight candidates have filed to run so far.

For the Copperas Cove city council, Shawn Alzona, Place 3 incumbent, was the first to file on July 25. He won a December 2021 runoff to fill the remaining time for the term, after the seat was vacated when Dan Yancey won his bid for the Mayor’s seat in November 2021.

John Hale filed on July 29 to run for Place 4, currently occupied by Jay Manning. Manning, who is term limited, cannot run again for this position.

For Place 5 on the Copperas Cove city council, Manuel “Monty” Montanez filed to run. Place 5 incumbent Dianne Yoho Campbell, has also filed to run for office.

Applications for a place on the ballot for the Copperas Cove city council will be accepted at the City Secretary’s office through 5 p.m., Monday, August 22.

The physical and mailing address for filing an application is Copperas Cove City Hall, Attn: Lisa Wilson, 914 S. Main Street, Suite D, Copperas Cove, TX 76522.

Over on the CCISD board of trustees, longtime incumbents Joan Manning (Place 4) and Mike Wilburn (Place 3) have filed to run.

For Place 5 on the board of trustees, Heather Copeland filed to run for that position. The current Place 5 incumbent is Jeff Gorres, who is in his first term of office, and filed to run on Wednesday.

Election filing for the CCISD trustees positions continues through Monday, August 22, through 5 p.m. that day. Regular office hours for the district are Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Candidate applications may be mailed or hand-delivered to Copperas Cove ISD, 408 S. Main St.
