There were dancing mascots as well as children and their parents at the National Dance Day event held at Copperas Cove’s GymKix Saturday afternoon.

The event was part of a nationwide campaign started in 2010 by the Dizzy Feet Foundation and “So You Think You Can Dance” co-creator and DFF co-president Nigel Lythgoe. It’s an annual celebration that takes place on the last Saturday in July, according to the Dizzy Feet website.

The goal is to encourage kids to get moving and be active and healthy which falls in line with GymKix’s goal as well, Ashley Coombs, GymKix Dance Program Director, said. There were free dance classes that were divided into two groups-8-year-olds and under and 9-year-olds and up, but the choreography they learned is the same choreography kids across the country learned, Coombs said.
