Rev. Robert Endter, longtime Covite and community volunteer, is pastor of Church of the Redeemer, and on Wednesday morning, he had the opportunity to give the invocation at the state Capitol in Austin.

He was welcomed to the Senate floor and led the prayer to open the morning meeting.

Along with Endter, a group of approximately two dozen Coryell County locals traveled to Austin and visited the capitol.

They first attended the opening of the House of Representatives session in the House Chambers, where the Coryell contingent was recognized on the House floor by District 59 Representative Shelby Slawson and the rest of the house.

Rep. Slawson also took the time to meet and speak with those who attended from the area.

After observing the House proceedings from the gallery, the group then moved to the Senate Chambers, where they were acknowledged by Sen. Pete Flores and greeted by his staff.

After Rev. Endter prayed for the meeting, he was greeted by Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick.

As with local government meetings, the legislative meetings also being with recognitions and proclamations issued by legislators.

Sen. Flores read a proclamation from the Senate floor, calling Wednesday, May 28, Coryell County Day for the Senate.

The group from Coryell then had lunch and also had a tour of the capitol during the afternoon.

Although the capitol building itself is usually open for public tours year round, this setting was a little different because the legislature, House and Senate, are both in session.

The 89th legislative session opened on Jan. 14.

This week is the final week of meetings for the 89th Texas legislature, with the final day – also known as “sine die” – being Monday, June 2. After the regular session ends June 2, the governor has until June 22 to sign or veto bills passed during the session. Bills without any specific beginning dates will become law on Sept. 1, 2025.

The next legislative session will open in January 2027.
