The Copperas Cove Police Department issued a statement on Monday about the theft and attempted theft of Kia and Hyundai models from 2011 to 2022, particularly those with traditional keys.

“This reflects a nationwide trend impacting many communities. These vehicles are being targeted due to a known security vulnerability that makes them more susceptible to theft,” said Lt. Krystal Baker with the Copperas Cove Police Department.

“While this is a widespread issue, we have experienced attempted thefts here in Copperas Cove involving these vehicles in various parts of the city. Additionally, two vehicle thefts involving different Kia and Hyundai models were reported in the areas of Creek Street and Deorsam Drive.

“If you live in or near those areas, we ask that you check your surveillance footage and contact us if you notice anything suspicious that may assist in the investigation.”

Suggestions provided to lower risk of theft or attempted theft include parking in a garage or in a well-lit area when possible, keeping exterior lights on overnight, locking vehicle doors and removing valuables from view, using a steering wheel lock or other visible deterrent.

Lt. Baker said that owners of these types of vehicles should contact the manufacturer or their local dealership to inquire about available software updates or anti-theft tools.

Lt. Baker said the department has requested a new shipment of steering wheel locks to help residents better secure their vehicles and will notify the public as soon as those become available for distribution.
