A shooting Thursday evening at the intersection of S. 7th Street and W. Avenue E left one man dead.

Copperas Cove police officers responded to the intersection at approximately 11:13 p.m. on July 23, to a call of shots being fired and located the gunshot victim, who was identified as 21-year-old Devonn Dozell Mayhew.

CCPD is still investigating the incident and asks that anyone with information regarding this shooting call the Copperas Cove Crime Stoppers at 254-547-1111 or Detective Sheldon at 254-547-8222 Ext. 6892.

Mayhew’s family is grieving the loss of their son and brother. Mayhew’s mother, Natasha Groce, spoke with the Leader-Press.

Devonn Mayhew was Class of 2019 graduate of Crossroads High School.

“Devonn was the kind of person that was shy and quiet but would light up the room with his smile,” said Groce. “He made everyone feel at ease. He loved to dance and have fun. He loved to draw. His favorite style was graffiti.”

Mayhew wanted to go to school for graphic design and also become a mechanic, she added.

“He was a family guy. He wanted to be there for everybody. He was loved by everyone. He also loved making music even if he was just playing around hanging out with his friends,” Groce said. “We just want to know what truly happened and why someone would just take his life like that. He was less than three blocks away from my home.”

Mayhew’s sister, Takia Mayhew, started a Go Fund Me to help the family cover the funeral costs. The link to the Go Fund Me is https://www.gofundme.com/f/230qoj98hc?utm_source=customer&utm_campaign=p...

As of press time, the Go Fund Me has raised $2,270 of its $5,000 goal, with 19 people donating.
