For 7-year-old Leonardo Torres, learning American Sign Language (ASL) isn’t just a fun summer activity. It’s a meaningful step toward connection.
"I really want to learn sign language so when I get to second grade, if my teacher knows sign language, I can speak to her in sign language," Leonardo said with a proud smile during Central Texas College’s College for Kids American Sign Language class.
Led by instructor Trynity Frizzell, the course introduced children and their families to the basics of ASL, including fingerspelling the alphabet, numbers, and everyday signs. But beyond vocabulary, the class focused on self-expression, empathy, and building bridges between people.
“We cover basic signs, letters, and numbers,” said Frizzell. “It’s really about helping students feel more comfortable expressing themselves in new ways. It’s an incredible foundation for lifelong communication.”
The class, part of CTC’s College for Kids summer program, welcomed both students and their parents into a shared learning experience. Together, they discovered not only a new language, but a new way to connect with each other and the world around them.
Participants left with more than just new knowledge, Frizzell said.
“Students gained a deeper understanding of how communication can go beyond words. The interactive, hands-on format keeps learners of all ages engaged and excited,” Frizzell said. “Learning sign language builds confidence and empathy. And it’s something families can continue to grow with together.”
CTC’s College for Kids program offers a variety of unique courses throughout the summer to spark creativity, curiosity, and a love of lifelong learning.
