City to take ballot applications for mayor, city council

city secretary’s office will begin accepting applications for the November ballot starting July 25 and ending August 24, 2015 at 5 p.m. Drawing for places on the ballot by opposing candidates for the same position will take place on August 26 at City Hall. This November, the positions of mayor along with city council places 1 and 2 are up for a vote. Mayor John Hull is term limited, as is Cheryl Meredith, who holds the place 1 seat on the city council. The term for city council place 2, occupied by Mark Peterson, who also serves as mayor pro tem, expires in November as do the two above positions. The city secretary’s office is open Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Although the offices are closed on Saturdays and Sundays, applications may be faxed to the office on those days at (254) 542- 8827 or emailed to Candidate packets are available both online and in the city secretary’s office. The two packets include the form which must be filed to run for office, as well as a packet containing information about campaign fundraising requirements and fund reporting, along with a state guide on local filing authority’s duties from the Texas Ethics Commission. Applications to run for office may be filed in person at 914 South Main St., Suite C, or mailed to P.O. Drawer 1449, Copperas Cove. The deadline to register to vote in November or update voter registration information is October 6, 2015, and those registrations are handled by the Coryell County voter registrar, Justin Carothers. Early voting for the November ballot begins October 19.
