This year will mark the 36th annual Food for Families, the largest single day food drive in the Central Texas area.

The event, set for Friday, Nov. 21, collects food and monetary donations to help stock food pantries within each area’s community.

Food collected in Copperas Cove will remain here in the community, to be distributed between Cove House, My Brother’s House, The Refuge Corporation, and Baptist Benevolence Ministries.

Copperas Cove H-E-B Plus! will again be the food collection location and the area will be set up from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.

Inside the store, H-E-B is inviting customers to add $5 to purchase “food bags” for Food for Families. Each $5 will purchase 12.5 pounds of food for families in need.

Last year, around 125,000 pounds of food was collected in the Copperas Cove area alone, with CCISD campuses donating a total of 5,173 pounds of food.

This year, the food donations will come in handy, particularly in light of the government shutdown, which began on Oct. 1 of this year and resulted in the suspension of SNAP, or food stamp, benefits for millions of Americans.
