The members of Altrusa International of Copperas Cove are ready to raise funds to purchase books for Copperas Cove Independent School District and Head Start students via their annual “Aiming For Literacy” Golf Classic.
The tournament takes place on Saturday, Oct. 16 at the Hills of Cove Golf Course.
Registration is at 7 a.m. and Tee Off is at 8 a.m.  The entry fee for the four-person scramble is $65 per player which includes light breakfast, lunch, golf course tournament fee, contest holes, welcome bag, door prize ticket, move-up hole, and two mulligans.
On Tuesday, the club members met at Giovanni’s for their regular meeting, during which they finalized logistics for tomorrow’s event.
Club President Debbie Llucana was excited that this year, the club is holding the event, its largest annual fundraiser.
“We will give every first-, second-, and third-grade student in Copperas Cove a free book,” said Llacuna. “We hope that this year, we will be able to go in and give students their books in person. They get to choose their book, and we will put their name in it. Unfortunately last year, we were only able to drop off books at the door.”
Many sponsors have stepped up, said Llacuna, such as H-E-B ,which donated 1,000 early-reader books last year.
In spite of 2020’s hiatus of the tournament, the club was still able to provide CCISD and Head Start students with books last year.
This year, the group will also ensure that every Head Start student in Copperas Cove will receive two free books, after taking a vote on Tuesday to increase the number of books from one.
In addition to the books given to hundreds of students in Copperas Cove, Altrusa also offers two scholarships to Copperas Cove ISD graduating seniors.
