Saturday was a steamy day in the city of Copperas Cove, but that did not prevent family and friends of Guam from coming out to celebrate the liberation of the island from Japanese forces on July 21, 1944.

An event that is held on the Saturday closest to July 21 each year, the Guam Liberation Day celebration is put on by the Chamorro Association of Central Texas, held annually by the group since 1985.

“It is always a great opportunity for friends and family to come together and honor those who sacrificed their lives as well as those who survived so that the people of Guam could be free from the Japanese,“said Joe Ada, Chairman and President of this year’s event.
