In the cool of the morning before the sweltering heat of August set in, cars began pulling into the parking lot of Refuge Ministries Cove Campus in Copperas Cove on Saturday morning.
One by one, participants lowered the tailgates on their trucks and even set up tables to lay out a plethora of tools and equipment, available for trade by all in attendance.
The idea of a Saturday morning tool swap began as a simple way to bond with other men of the church and to give a helping hand to anyone looking for a specific nut or bolt missing out of their toolbox.
“I’ve got five toolboxes at home,” said Bruce Davis, member of the Refuge Family and event organizer. “I’ve got one in my truck, one in my garage, two in my barn and one in my camper, but I’m always missing a 14 millimeter ¼-inch drive. So I got to thinking, there’s got to be people who have two of them. I figured, hey, let’s have a little church tool swap! Bring out your excess stuff that you just always have extra of and see if guys need it more.
“We’re not doing a garage sale or a buy, we just drink some coffee, have some fellowship, and see if guys can complete their tool set. Everybody’s missing that certain screwdriver or that one wrench that they dropped somewhere.” he explained.
Davis also stated that the community is always invited to attend the tool swap.
He additionally speculated that there may be a few more tool swaps scheduled in the future when the weather is cooler and that if the church hosts a garage sale there would be a bunch of tools for sale.
He hopes to see a great turnout from both the church and the community for this unique gathering to help others find what they are looking for.
