Play like a kid

By Lynette Sowell   The brightly colored uniforms will line the outfield. Names like Red Sox (yeah!), Yankees (boo!), Rangers, Phillies, Reds. Hats will be adjusted to block out the sunny glare. Teams will be announced as they march with their coaches along the baseline.

Make that a glass of cold water

By Willis Webb   How many ways does your small child have to get a drink of water after beddy-bye time? That depends on a number of conditions, abilities and attitudes. Those factors could provide an infinitesimal number of scenarios.

The picture on the box

By Renae Brumbaugh   Don’t you just hate it when stuff doesn’t work out like the picture on the box says it’s supposed to? For the past several years, I’ve admired the new trend of hanging a chandelier over a bathtub. Talk about bathing in luxury!

President Obama’s potent changes

By Rich Lowry   There are few, if any, people who have more moral authority in the black community than President Barack Obama. A few weeks ago, he put it to good use. The President launched the “My Brother’s Keeper” initiative, aimed at fostering achievement among minority young men.

Oversharing

By Lynette Sowell   I should start off this semi-rant by saying I’m a fan of social media used for the right reasons. I use it for keeping in touch with my family that lives over 1,600 miles away, with old friends from high school and college.

House of Doom

By Renae Brumbaugh   My classroom has become The Hotel California. Oh, not for my students. They’re great. As a matter of fact, they’re thriving and making me proud every single day. I wish I could say the same for the little birds that begin their short lives in my classroom incubator.

A military budget of delusion

By Rich Lowry   The Obama administration says that we need to end what it calls “the era of austerity” in Washington. Notably excluded from this admonition is the one department of government that is actually experiencing austerity worthy of the name.

Hidden treasures

By Lynette Sowell   Sometimes, you never know when you’re going to run across something special. I was walking across a hotel lobby on a Friday night, tired from my travels, when I heard the music.

Pro rodeo clown Kajun Kidd

By Willis Webb When you grow up in 1940s-1950s Texas in a rural area or small town, chances are rodeo will be one of your favorite sports. Since my father started out as a rancher and then was a buyer for a meat packing plant the rest of his life, rodeo was part of our lives.
