There’s a reason I call the love of my life “Superman.” He’s one of those disgusting-I mean amazing people who can do everything well. He’s a master of many trades, and I adore him! But the ONE thing I had on him has always been Words with Friends. I could beat him every time. So you can imagine my mood as I write this . . . he’s beating me senseless.
And though he won’t admit it, I can see it in his eyes. He’s loving every minute of it.
Humility stinks, sometimes. It can nearly drive a girl to cheating . . . if I were that kind of girl. Which of course, I’m not.
So since I’m being taught a hard lesson in humility, I decided to google “humility” quotes. After all, if I’m going to be taken to school, I might as well try to be a good student. Here is what I found:
“A true genius admits that he/she knows nothing.” ~ Albert Einstein
“As long as you are proud you cannot know God. A proud man is always looking down on things and people: and, of course, as long as you are looking down you cannot see something that is above you.” ~ C.S. Lewis
“There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your former self.” ~ Ernest Hemingway
“On the highest throne in the world, we still sit only on our own bottom.” ~ Michel de Montaigne
And finally, “The greatest lesson in life is to know that even fools are right sometimes.” ~ Winston S. Churchill
Humility is a difficult concept to grasp, because in my opinion, the moment we believe ourselves to be humble is the moment we cross the line into pride, for does a truly humble man realize and acknowledge his own humility? If he does, isn’t he bragging?
I will admit, though, that life has humbled me. The older I get, and the more I live, the more I understand how little I have to offer. The more wisdom I gain, the more aware I become of how much I don’t know. And believe me, there’s a lot I don’t have a clue about.
Many times, God has humbled me with all my “I’ll never’s.” It seems every time I say I’ll never do something, God puts me in a position where I’m forced to do that very thing. I said I’d never be a teacher . . . I’d never teach junior high . . . I’d never live in the same vicinity as snakes . . . I’d never clean up bird poo . . .
I’ve decided to go on the record as saying “I’ll never be a millionaire.” We’ll see what happens.
Honestly, you’d think I’d have learned by now not to think too highly of myself. The higher I place myself, the further I fall when some handsome smart guy comes along and beats me at Words with Friends. From now on, I’m just going to assume I’m pretty good, assume the other guy’s probably better, and move on with my life.
But just to be safe, I’m going to add the thesaurus to my daily reading list.
“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves,” Philippians 2:3.
