Lady Dawgs win Bush’s Classic Tournament to improve to 7-0

The Copperas Cove Lady Dawgs’ basketball team ran their record to 7-0 with an undefeated run in their host tournament, the Bush’s Classic, held Thursday through Saturday at Copperas Cove High School.

The Lady Dawgs outscored Leander Rouse 28-11 in the second half on their way to a 44-27 win in Saturday’s Championship game to finish the tournament a perfect 5-0.

Senior post Kaysha McCloud was Tournament MVP while senior guards Madisen “MJ” Honea and Deja Champan were All-Tournament selections.

Cove and Rouse were knotted at 16-all heading into the halftime break before The Lady Dawgs turned it on in the second half. 

Senior Deja Chapman led the Cove attack with 11 points and nine rebounds. Senior Livonna Wallace added seven points followed by senior Keanna Garrett (8 pts, 5 rebounds, 3 steals) and Powell (6 pts, 6 rebs).

The Lady Dawgs opened the tournament with a 65-34 win over Brenham on Thursday with McCloud notching 16 pts and eight rebounds to lead the way. Honea added 10 pts and assists in the win.

Cove closed out day one with a lopsided 55-20 win over Del Valle with eight different Lady Dawgs contributing to the score board.

Another double-double by McCloud paced the Lady Dawgs in their 54-35 win over Manor to begin Friday’s action. She finished with 27 points and 16 boards in the win. Powell added seven points and five rebounds followed by Honea with eight points, eight assists and seven steals. 

The Lady Dawgs rounded out poll play with a 44-27 win over Austin Anderson Friday evening. McCloud again paced the Lady Dawgs with 21 points and five boards with Honea adding 10 points and five assists.

The Lady Dawgs return to action tonight at home against McNeil with a 6 p.m. tip-off in game one of a varsity double-header. The Bulldawgs will face the Round Rock Red Raiders in the second game.
