Honea takes gold in Copperas Cove cross country opener

TEMPLE – The Copperas Cove cross country team opened their season Friday morning at the Temple Invitational held at Lions Park.
Cove junior Madisen Honea started strong with a first-place finish and time of 19:55.1 to pace the girls’ squad to a 10th place finish.
Honea jumped out front early and held a tight lead about half way through the course before separating from the pack with a 19-second advantage over Waco High’s Anna Garner (20:14.1).
Also contributing to the Lady Dawgs’ 10th-place finish were Jalyn Ayala (22nd – 22:17), Emily Armstrong (43rd – 23:17.8), Juyah Robinson (69th – 24:47.4) and Danielle Diaz (78th – 25:14.3). Mikayla Devins (88th – 27:29.1) and Destini Spruill (89th – 27:9.2) also competed for the Lady Dawgs.
Waco Midway won the meet with five runners finishing in the top 31.
Cove’s Micah Sedilo (17:17.1) and Angelica Montanez (17:50.3) competed for the junior varsity squad.
The Bulldawgs finished 16th overall led by James Ross’ 82nd-place finish and time of 20:12. Also contributing to the Bulldawgs’ finish were Evan Thomas (84th – 20:35), Elridge McAdams (86th – 21:04), Tyler Teeter (98th – 23:08.4) and Joshua Guerrero (103rd – 25:16.7). Also competing for Cove were (Logan Foster (105th – 27:19) and Connor Medrano (106th – 28:13.4).
Round Rock Stony Point won the meet with five runners in the top 24. Shoemaker’s Jeremias Serrano Velez was the individual winner with a time of 16:00.6.
Competing for the junior varsity were Isaiah Sobers (35th - 20:59.7), Deayra Corbin (65th - 22:31.7), Leonardo Deleon-Ortiz (67th - 22:37.8), Colby Thomas (70th - 22:43), Paul Santagate (77th - 23:43.6), Jason Pope (85th - 27:43.5), Justin Teeter (88th - 28:46) and Nigel Freeman (29:13.5).
