As most seniors are preparing for life after high school, four Copperas Cove seniors will represent their school one last time before embarking on their post-high school adventures.

Multi-sport standouts Chyanne Chapman and Madison Wasiak will represent the Lady Dawgs volleyball program as members of the Red Team in the 2017 Fellowship of Christian Athletes Victory Bowl Red versus Blue volleyball game.

Chapman was a multi-year starter on the varsity for head coach Cari Lowery and earned herself a spot on the Texas Sports Writers Association All-State Team as a junior while setting a new school record for blocks with 283 that set a new school record formerly held by Kara Kemp (277).

“It’s her third year on varsity and she has assisted in 103 of my 700 wins,” said Lowery during the annual awards banquet. “In her varsity career she’s had 464 kills, 672 blocks and last year set a new school record for blocks with 283 in a season.”

Two-year varsity starter Madison Wasiak was voted Most Valuable Receiver as a junior with 517 digs and 567 serve receives.

She topped that honor her senior year as the Outstanding Receiver Award with a team-high 929 serves received and 807 digs.

“Maddie was our libero,” said Lowery. “In her varsity career, she had 959 serves, 1,496 receptions, 1,325 digs and she’s second in the history of the program in season and career digs.”

Both students were also standouts in the classroom earning spots on the Academic All-State team, where a student must maintain a 94 or above average for all four years of high school. Wasiak carried a 95.87 average and was 17th in senior class at awards time. Chapman was 25th with a 95.12 average.

“This makes me really proud because this does take a huge accomplishment above and beyond everything else,” said Lowery. “You have to be a senior to make the Academic All-State Team and you have to have a 94-plus average for your entire high school career and we hade five seniors make the team. That’s impressive and we’re proud of them.”

The match is set for 12:30 p.m. Saturday, June 10 at University High School in Waco. Cost of admission is $5 and parking is free.

Another pair of multi-sport standouts, Tyson Curry and Blair Fraser, will represent the Bulldawgs football program later that evening in the Blue vs Red football game at 6:30 p.m.

Curry was voted as the Defensive Most Valuable Player and got a second nod for Linebacker of the Year. For his career, he had 207 tackles, 16 tackles for losses, seven pass break ups, one interception, one caused fumble, one fumble recovery and two blocked field goals.

“Tyson Curry played multiple positions for us defensively,” said defensive coordinator Reb Brock during the National Signing Day festivities in February. “He’s like that patch kit for a bike. You put him in one spot and a hole busts through somewhere else. You move him over and he’d plug the hole. He did whatever we asked him to do.

“He was our leading tackler for two years. He’s very coachable, but what’s even better, he would coach the younger players and that’s a great show of leadership.”

Fraser was voted as the Defensive Back of the Year as a senior. Fraser had 53 career tackles, including a second-best 34 as a senior. He also had 11 career pass breakups.

“When you put on a Bulldawg uniform, there are a lot of things you represent,” said head coach Jack Welch during the annual Bulldawg banquet. “We have had better win-loss records in the past and a lot of times you’re judged on your win-loss record. This group here is a group that will long be remembered in this program because they represented and I mean that very sincerely. This was a great group of players.”

Last but not least, All-American cheerleader and community activist Kamryn Mayberry will represent Cove on the Red cheer squad.

The three-time All-American cheerleader also participates in competitive cheer. She was a co-captain as a junior and was voted captain as a senior.

Mayberry was also heavily involved with community projects while reigning as the Teen Miss Copperas Cove Rabbit Fest.
