Dawg Tennis improves to 11-4 overall, 1-0 in district play

The Copperas Cove tennis team opened up district play with a convincing 17-2 win over the Harker Heights Knights Tuesday afternoon at the Dawg Tennis Center.
The Cove boys’ doubles dominated their competition, only losing four games while winning 36 to earn the easy sweep.
The duo of Noahs – Chapman and Samarripa - won their match 6-1, 6-0 while the duo of Adrian Alejandro/Dedrick Whitley blanked their opponents 6-0, 6-0. Ari Diaz and Ben Fernandez won their match 6-2, 6-1.
The girls’ duos had to fight a bit harder but achieved the same results.
Martha Abraham and Zamira Manuel won 6-3, 6-2 while LeLe Kinere and Paige Purdum won their match 6-4, 6-1 and Telsa Mackwelung/Shayla Pollot won 6-2, 6-4.
The mixed doubles team of Matthew Derosia and Liliana Gray closed out the doubles’ sweep with a 6-2, 6-3 win.
In singles, the boys had another strong showing with five of six lopsided wins.
Samarripa beat Sam Boehm 6-2, 6-2 while Chapan earn a 6-0, 6-1 win over Jason Bohac; Fernandez beat Cash Dalman 6-0, 6-3; Diaz beat Daulton Bailey 6-1, 6-2 and Derosia beat Thomas Austin 6-3, 6-2. 
Levi Gay lost his match to Jesse Flint 6-3, 6-4.
The girls also took five of six singles’ matches but again had to work a bit harder.
Purdum defeated Kilee O’Bryant in a 7-6(3), 5-7 (10-8) battle while Elizabeth Lewis escaped 6-4, 6-7(4) (13-11) over Heights’ Allison Greer.
Abraham earned a straight-sets 6-3, 6-4 contest over Sally Walker, Kinere beat Erin Mathew 6-1, 6-2 and Gray beat Anne Govan 7-6(4), 6-4.
Manuel suffered the only girls’ loss in a tough 6-7, 6-1 (10-1) loss.
Dawg Tennis returns to action Saturday morning with a match against Robinson at 8:30 a.m. and another against Liberty Hill beginning at 1:30 p.m. Both matches will be held at the Dawg Tennis Center.
