Cove rallies over St. Dominic Savio 5-4

The Bulldawgs rallied from a 4-2 deficit to beat St. Dominic Savio 5-4 at home on Wednesday. The lead changed four times before Cove scored on a walk-off passed ball to secure the win. A shot off the bat of senior McAvan Price was mishandled by Savio, allowing him to reach. Pinch-runner Brandon Williams took advantage of two more errors to advance to third and eventually home for the walk-off run in the bottom of the seventh Terrance Chamberlin was solid at the plate for Bulldawgs. Chamberlin went 2-4 and scored two runs. He singled in the second inning and doubled in the third inning. Cove senior Adrian Oviedo struck out the Eagles’ Schyler Hallberg when they were threatening with the bases loaded in the top of the fifth. Cove catcher Cameron Johnson mishandled the strike and eventually threw out Kane Gonzalez who was attempting to advance home. Oviedo held St. Dominic Savio hitless over 1 2/3 innings, allowed no earned runs, walked one and struck out two. In the bottom of the second, Bulldawgs grabbed the early lead, 1-0. Chamberlin started the rally for Bulldawgs with a single. A groundout by Michael Hays then moved Chamberlin from first to third before Price knocked him home. Three runs by Savio in the second inning gave them a 3-1 lead before a sacrifice by Johnson scored Tim Bechtold after singling to center field to reach. The Eagles added another run in fourth inning for a 4 -2 lead. The Bulldawgs knotted the game at 4 -4 in the bottom of the inning. Williams again scored on a passed ball pinch running for Johnson, who walked to reach to lead off the inning. Chamberlin eventually scored on an Eagles’ error after reaching on another error. Cove (4-3) scored five runs on five hits. Chamberlin went 2-for- 4 and scored two runs to lead the Dawgs. Tim Bechtold (2-for-4, R), and Jeremi Hawkins (1-for-3) accounted for the other three hits. Conner Lake gave up four earned runs on three hits in four innings pitched and Alex Hartwell held the Eagles scoreless in 1 1/3 innings on the bump while surrendering just one hit. The Bulldawgs travel to Waco today for the two-day tournament at Waco Connally. The Dawgs have a contest against Waco University at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, followed by an 11:45 a.m. matchup with Mexia. The Dawgs return to action Saturday at 11:45 a.m. against Gatesville before a 4:15 p.m. contest with Lorena.
