Laurie Barnes died December 25 at Scott & White Hospital in Temple.
Laurie was born in Houston and joined her adoptive parents Ken and Carolyn Barnes six months later. After attending public schools in Houston, she moved to the family ranch in San Marcos, where she was graduated from San Marcos High School.
Ever an adventuresome free spirit, she served in both the U.S. Navy and Army before enrolling at Texas Woman’s University, where she was graduated cum laude with a degree in Education. She taught for many years in Copperas Cove schools, before retiring for medical reasons. She was an ardent bibliophile and maintained an extensive history and biography collection.
She is survived by her parents, brother Bruce and his wife Stephanie and their daughter Claire, all of San Marcos. Also aunt Patsy McGaughy and husband Clay of San Antonio, aunt Doris Thomson of Houston, and numerous cousins.
A spirit now truly free.
A lifelong lover and trainer of animals, she would want any memorial contributions directed to the San Marcos Animal Shelter.
Arrangements are pending at Pennington Funeral home in San Marcos.
