On Tuesday, Sept. 22, Rob Erwin was sworn in as interim Coryell County Judge at the County Commissioners courtroom annex.
He was sworn in by Judge Trent Ferrell of the 52nd District Court, following the resignation of Judge Roger Miller on Sept. 14. The commissioners met on Tuesday morning and voted unanimously to appoint Erwin to the office.
In his resignation letter, Miller stated that personal and professional circumstances had made it increasingly difficult for him to do his job.
Judge Ferrell explained, “This is an unexpired term until his [Erwin’s] official term begins on Jan. 1.”
The last time the commissioners appointed an interim county judge was in 2007, when County Judge Riley Simpson passed away while in office, and the commissioners appointed John Firth to finish out Simpson’s term. Firth went on to be elected and served as county judge until 2018, when he chose not to run again and Miller was elected to office.
In Erwin’s case, he won the March 2026 primary in a runoff election against Miller, and was slated to be sworn in, come Jan. 1, 2027. This means Erwin is taking office a few months early.
During the swearing in ceremony, Erwin placed his hand on his family Bible which had been used in several other swearing-in ceremonies in his family.
Following the ceremony, Judge Erwin addressed those in attendance and said, “I would like to thank the commissioner’s court for having the confidence to appoint me to this position. It’s an honor and I’m humbled to serve as the next county judge. I understand the responsibility that comes with that and I will approach that with respect and integrity for every citizen in Coryell County.”
He continued, “My goal is to listen, work hard and to make decisions that promote our community and our county as a whole. Coryell County is a place with strong people and communities and I look forward to working with our commissioners, our local leaders, and citizens to build on that foundation and address our challenges ahead.”
“I feel relaxed and ready for this,” Erwin said.
Following the swearing in, refreshments were served in the court’s conference room and constituents had the opportunity to meet and visit with the judge.
