Falling through the cracks

By Lynette Sowell

I can’t believe the school year is already past the halfway point. When did that happen? Day by day, little by little. School supplies are at a premium now, the backpacks are getting that worn look, the shoes which fit in August might be a little tighter now. These things happen, little by little.

Just like falling through the cracks. Our district’s schools received an excellent report from the state agency, but I can’t help but feel a little sad for the kids who fall through the cracks and I wonder how we can all stop that from happening. Despite the district’s best efforts to maintain graduation rates and meet curriculum and testing requirements, there’s going to be a cluster of kids that, after they graduate, will fall through some cracks.

Things like falling through the cracks doesn’t happen after graduation. It starts long before, during the years of wearing out lunchboxes and squeaky sneakers.
