Copperas Cove boy among new confirmed positive COVID-19 cases in the city

A Copperas Cove boy under the age of 10 is one of five new positive confirmed COVID-19 cases added to an updated list released on Monday by the City of Copperas Cove.

Initially, the count was four additional, but after prsss time on Monday, the city issued another release, adding a Copperas Cove man in his 60s. 

Altogether, there are 24 active cases, with 18 recoveries and 2 deaths, with a total count of 44 within the Copperas Cove city limits. 

Monday’s reports bring the total number of positive cases in Coryell County to 88, when comparing the county’s COVID-19 tracker updated on Friday. Of those 88 cases, 51 are listed as recovered and 35 are active cases. In Coryell County as a whole, there have been 14 new cases of the virus since in Coryell County since June 1. 

The City of Copperas Cove has invited residents to participate in a 10-question online survey, related to the city’s response to the Coronavirus pandemic. 

“We would like to hear from those we serve on how you feel the City handled the pandemic, and areas you feel we can improve in the event we face a future similar situation,” the City of Copperas Cove stated on its Facebook page. 

The survey may be accessed at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/GTYXLVK. The city requested that surveys be completed by Friday, June 19, 8 a.m. 

Elsewhere in Coryell County, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice is tracking its own numbers for inmates housed in its facilities. 

TDCJ units in Coryell County show a total of four active cases among inmates, according to the update of the TDCJ online COVID-19 reporting dashboard as of Saturday, June 13. 

Altogether, the total in the local TDCJ units is 212, with 208 of those inmate cases now listed as recovered by the TDCJ. The breakdown of current active cases in TDCJ units is: Crain (1), Hughes (1), Murray (1), and Woodman State Jail (1). The Hilltop and Mt. View units did not have any positive confirmed cases of the virus. 

This brings the collective case count in Coryell to 299, when combining reports from the City of Copperas Cove, Coryell County, and TDCJ. The TDSHS site lists 300 as of Sunday afternoon.

Texas has a total of 87,854 confirmed positive cases, with an estimated 58,341 having recovered, or 66.4%, leaving an estimated 27,537 active cases. There have been 1,976 fatalities.

The daily trend in new cases has seen 1,843 new cases reported on Sunday, with 2,331 new cases on Saturday, the largest increase in new cases in one day since the state began showing new case trends in early March. 

A total of 2,287 are presently hospitalized in Texas with the virus, 279 more than the 2,008 hospitalized as of last Wednesday. However, the state has a total of 14,660 available hospital beds, 1,587 available ICU beds, and 5,843 available ventilators, all increased availability when compared to last Wednesday’s update by the Texas Department of State Health Services. 

In our local hospital area, Region L, which includes Bell, Coryell, Lampasas, Hamilton, Mills, and Milam Counties, there are presently 16 patients hospitalized with COVID-19, down from 19 last Wednesday.  

Statewide, the three counties with highest positive numbers continue to be Harris, Dallas, and Tarrant Counties, with Harris County topping all 254 Texas counties, having 16,568 cases, and 6,694 of those cases recovered. In Dallas County, a total of 8,847 of its 13,930 cases have recovered. In Tarrant County, with 7,253 cases, 3,425 have recovered. 

Texas Governor Greg Abbott is holding a pres conference on Tuesday at 1 p.m., regarding the state's hospital capacity.
