ERRONEOUS EFFORT

Cove errors help Midway to 7-1 win

Not much went right for the Copperas Cove Bulldawgs baseball team Tuesday night against the Midway Panthers.

A booted ball on the first play of the game set an ominous tone for the Dawgs as five costly errors made Midway’s job much easier in their 7-1 win over the Bulldawgs.

“I don’t know if we’ve made five errors all district and, to come out and make five all infield errors, is not typical of us,” said Copperas Cove head coach Dusty Brittain. “Several of them cost us runs. You’re definitely not going to beat a team of that quality when you just give them runs like that. It’s disappointing.

“I told the kids, ‘this is a playoff atmosphere and they’re a playoff-caliber team.’ We just have to play better when we’re playing quality teams and we didn’t get it done.”

A routine ground ball by Midway’s Matthew Miles was mishandled by Cove shortstop Terrance Chamberlin, allowing Miles to reach.

A throwing error by third baseman Michael Hays on a two-out bunt by Steiler Harris allowed Miles to score the first of two first-inning runs. A walk by Caden Henderson plated Bryce Johnigan, who reached with the only hit of the inning, for the second unearned run of the inning.

“It’s unfortunate that the first ball in play of the game, we boot it,” said Brittain. “It just set the tone for the whole game and it makes it difficult on us to play from behind. Then they try a bunt for a hit with two outs. All we had to do was make a play but we end up throwing it away and giving up a run. It was a frustrating start.”

The Bulldawgs got one of those runs back in the bottom half of the inning.

A single by leadoff hitter Tim Bechtold resulted in a score after a walk by Cameron Johnson ad a sacrifice bunt by Michael Hays moved Bechtold to third before advancing home on a wild pitch.

The Panthers added two more runs in the top of the second.

A walk by Midway’s Clayton Stewart from the ninth spot to leadoff the top of the second inning and a double to the left field fence by Miles put two more runners on for the Panthers. Stewart
