Cove golfers Bryce Anderson, Elle Fox and Tyler Morrison will test their mettle against some of the top junior golfers around when they compete in the Lone Star Junior Golf Championships, presented by PGA TOUR Superstore, this weekend at the Tribute Golf Club in The Colony. Morrison, a regional qualifier as a member of the Copperas Cove Lady Dawgs varsity golf team, will compete in the girls’ 15-18 age group comprised of 24 Texas players and one from Colorado. She is scheduled for a noon tee off Saturday to begin the 36-hole qualifying tournament. Morrison has had first place finishes on the Junior Tour at Lions Municipal on March 1 and picked up another win to close out March at the Lakeway Golf Course on March 29. Anderson, a leader for the Copperas Cove Bulldawgs’ golf team this year, will compete in the boys’ 15-18 division with 32 entrants. Anderson will tee off at 10 a.m. Saturday. Last, but definitely not least, young golf phenom Elle Fox will compete in the 11-player girls’ 13-14 division. She is scheduled for a 11:20 a.m. tee time. Fox competed in the Taylormade Junior Open in June of 2014 where she finished fifth in the girls’ 10-12 division. Fox topped that feat with a first-place finish at the Texas Junior Golf Tour Waterchase Junior Championship, played at Waterchase Golf Course in Fort Worth in November. The 36-hole event was reduced to 18 holes when round 2 was cancelled due to inclement weather. She finished 17 strokes in front of the pack through 18 holes. Cove standout and current golfer at McLennan Community College, Drew Dewald, finished second at last year’s Lone Star JGC with a score of 140, just one stroke our of the lead. A PGA TOUR Superstore Dinner will be held tonight from 6-8 p.m. at the Plano (Preston) Store location. Players will earn rankings in the Junior Golf Scoreboard, Golfweek and Global Junior Golf rankings and players have an opportunity to qualify for American Junior Golf Association, North American Junior Am and Optimist International tournaments. Awards will also be given in nine different age groups, but the rankings will be lumped into larger groups. The 14-15 and 16-18 boys will form the Boys’ Championship Division and girls 13-14 and 15-18 will form the Girls’ Championship Division. The boys’ 14-18 champion will receive four performance stars where the top five will get one each. Same goes for the girls’ 13-18 division.
