Cove hoopsters honored with All-District selections

Topsy-turvy seasons for the Bulldawgs and Lady Dawgs basketball season end on a high-note as several members of each squad were recognized for the efforts by the coaches of the district with the announcement of the District 12-6A All-District selections.
 
Leading the Lady Dawgs honorees was junior post Chyanne Chapman, who received a First Team nod.
 
Senior guard Keturah Taylor and senior post Daisha Hunter were voted to the second team.
 
A fist-full of players - Alex Wilson, Twillesa Shipman, Pria Johnson, Kaycie Gatewood and junior Kayla McCloud - also received Honorable Mention.
 
Wilson, Gatewood. Johnson, Shipman, Chapman and senior Mya Goudeau were also named to the Academic All-District list.
 
Midway’s Marie Benson earned District MVP honors while Shoemaker’s Tija “Stretch” Hawkins was named Defensive Player of the Year, Killeen’s Ke’aunna Johnson was named Offensive Player of the Year and Harker Heights’ Da’Jaha Daniel was voted Newcomer of the Year.
 
Killeen’s Latisha Williams was voted Coach of the Year.
 
Killeen had six players named to First or Second Teams with Midway, Belton and Shoemaker following with four selections each.
 
Senior Devante Robinson topped the list for the Bulldawgs with his First Team selection while seniors Malyk Thomas and Wyatt Behara, along with junior Dahmir Pearson and freshman Quinton Ford all received Honorable Mention.
 
Harker Heights’ Davon Clare was named the District MVP while Shoemaker’s Javon Levi and Tyrone Williams were named Offensive and Deefensive Players of the Year, respectively. Newcomer honors went to Midway’s Ty Sadler and Coach of the Year went to Shoemaker’s Edmund Pritchett.
 
BASEBALL
Cove 9, Temple 1
 
The Cove Bulldawgs improved their season record t0 10-3 with a 9-1 win over the Class 5A Temple Wildcats on Monday.
 
The Dawgs used a three-RBI home run by Tim Bechtold took take the lead in the third inning after the Wildcats scored their only run of the contest to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning.
 
The Dawgs blew the game open with a five-run sixth-inning. A double by Terrance Chamberlin and a two-run single by Jeremi Hawkins, along with walks by sophomore Cameron Johnson and Bechtold, paced the Bulldawgs in the inning.
 
Cove added an insurance run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly ball by Chamberlin that scored senior Josh Carbajal who reached on a double to left field.
 
Carbajal was 2-for-4 with two doubles and a run to lead the Dawgs followed by Bechtold (1-for-2, R, 4RBI, HR, 2BB), Hawkins (1-for-3, 2RBI), Chamberlin (1-for-3, R, 2RBI, 2B) and sophomore Tyler Ingram (1-for-4).
 
Sophomore Jayen Smith picked up the win on the bump for the Dawgs. He surrendered one earned run on four hits while striking out three and walking one in six innings.
 
Temple’s TJ Rum suffered the loss.
 
The Bulldawgs play in the Pflugerville Connally Tournament this weekend (weather permitting) with a 2:30 p.m. contest against Stony Point at East View High School and a 7:30 contest against tournament host Connally at Cougar Feld.
 
SOFTBALL
Belton 10, Lady Dawgs 0
 
Cove’s lead-off hitter Marissa Williams broke up Belton pitcher Sydney Holman’s perfect game but the one hit is all the Lady Dawgs could muster against Holman and the potent Belton Lady Tigers in a 10-0 run-rule win by Belton on Tuesday in Cove.
 
Cove pitcher Elana Montanez did a good job of holding the Belton bats at bay in the first two innings but a five-run third inning opened up a 6-0 lead for the Lady Tigers on their way to a 10-0 win in five innings.
 
Holman fanned 14 batters and sat down 15 of the 16 batters she faced with only Williams Tessa Fain making contact with a shot inside the lines.
 
Belton’s bats were led by Kendall Mraz. She was 3-for-3 for three runs and three RBIs with a home run, followed by Caleigh Robinson (3-for-3), Avery Drake (2-for-4, R) and Destynie Moore (2-for-4, 2R, RBI) and Bethany Edwards (2-for-4, 2R, RBI).
 
The Lady Dawgs host Ellison tonight. The junior varsity plays at 5 p.m. with the varsity to follow.
