Take back the night

Kickoff party draws large crowd to downtown area to celebrate night out.

The downtown blocks of the city were abuzz with activity Saturday evening as hundreds flocked to the kickoff party for the 16th annual National Night Out. Members of the police and fire departments will be making their rounds to four locations throughout the city as neighborhoods come together to reclaim their streets against drugs and violence. Bikes were won and bellies filled with hotdogs, cookies and drinks as Copperas Cove promoted crime prevention as part of a 31-year-old program that includes 37.8 million people in 16,124 communities across the United States. “We have this every year so that members of the community can come together and hopefully take back to their neighborhoods tips about crime prevention,” CCPD PIO Martin Ruiz said. “This is an excellent way for the citizens to get out and meet officers and firefighters of our city.”
