Students give their time during spring break

Hannah Brockett and Kryztian Wheeler have been on spring break this week, like the rest of their classmates at Copperas Cove High School.

However, this duo hasn’t been spending time on a beach or lazing the day away, but giving back to a neighborhood on Phil Avenue.

Brockett has been teaching a Vacation Bible School curriculum, Boomerang Express, while Wheeler has been in charge of games and meal planning for the week.

The two have led the youth group from First Baptist Church in holding a Boomerang Express Lunch Bunch every day this week during spring break. Each day, they along with others from the youth group provide lunch, have story time, games and crafts at the building which serves as the local Salvation Army office as well as a former Boys & Girls Club location.

This isn’t Brockett’s first time in leading small groups of children.

“I first started helping with VBS when I was in seventh grade,” Brockett said. Last summer, she had the chance to teach a VBS program with her church, who sent a group to Nome, Alaska for summer missions to assist a church in that community. Some, like Brockett, worked with children’s and community programs while others helped with construction projects. Brockett hopes to go again this year. This week, however, her attention has been focused on the 15 or so children who have come every day to the Lunch Bunch on Phil Avenue.

Wheeler said he first became part of the youth group in seventh grade until he moved, then returned to Copperas Cove again. He said he enjoys working with the kids at activities like this. Wheeler took turns with Brockett, with part of the group playing games outside with him while the others worked on a craft inside with her.

Peter Simpson, youth director for the church, said the group volunteers in the community for events like D-Now. This spring break program is a little different, and he said the attendance varies from day to day. One thing is common every day, that being the fact that the neighborhood kids have something to do while being off from school this week.

Both Brockett and Wheeler are seniors at Copperas Cove High School and the two are already looking ahead to what’s next. Brockett plans to attend Central Texas College for EMT training and would eventually like to be a missionary. Wheeler is planning to enlist in the United States Air Force. In fact, Wheeler took his ASVAB on Wednesday as he prepares for life after graduation.
