Place 5 runoff voting started

The runoff election between Azeita Taylor and Kirby Lack moves into its second day today at the community room of the Copperas Cove Police Department with the polls open from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. through August 27. The polls will open for a 12-hour shift on Aug. 28 starting at 7 a.m. Election Day is set for September 2 with the polls open again for 12 hours starting at 7 a.m. Place 5 became vacant in March when Kenn Smith resigned his post, a special election was set on July 22 where George Duncan, Lack and Taylor drew 650 voters to the polls. Neither of the three received the required 50 percent of the vote to be declared the winner resulting in a runoff between the top two vote recipients. Lack received 266 votes with Taylor garnering 230 and Duncan collecting 154.
