H-E-B Plus! was transformed on Tuesday morning into a mini-spa for military spouses, as the store along with the USO Fort Hood held its first Military Spouse Makeover day at the Copperas Cove store.
“We have monthly events in the Fort Hood area,” said Isabel Hubbard with USO Fort Hood. “People can find out when and where those events will be by following our Facebook page.” For Tuesday morning’s event, the two dozen or so military spouses signed up via Facebook to attend.
Johnny Mojica, the Centex Community Coordinator H-E-B and Fort Hood, welcomed the spouses to the event.
“It takes a special kind of bravery that military spouses cultivate,” Mojica said of the reasons for recognizing the contributions of the women who attended on Tuesday.
First, the women were treated to a comple7Amentary chair massage, along with a light breakfast, after which they were divided into groups and had the chance to visit several stations in the store, to include the Floral Department, Bakery, Kitchen Connection, and Beauty/Cosmetics.
Floral representative Maggie Honea gave them floral arranging tips to keep fresh flowers and their water fresher, and the women each were able to make their own arrangement to take home. The same was true for the Bakery, where spouses decorated their own mini ckaes with the guidance of store bakery partners.
Kaci Haagsma with the Primo Picks team shared cooking tips and a recipe for Southern pickle chicken nuggets, which spouses were able to sample.
Lastly, Melanie Campbell, one of the store’s trained beauty consultants gave them tips on applying false eyelashes along with techniques for accentuating eyebrows.
Leann Bain, the manager of the beauty and cosmetics department, said her department has someone on hand every day to help give tips to customers, with Campbell also available to help do makeup and hair for events.
“All someone needs to do is call ahead and she’ll meet with them,” Bain said.
Every woman was sent home with a goody bag from H-E-B, filled with products and samples. The day also served as a type of mother’s morning out, with H-E-B store partners providing activities and games for children that morning.
Margaret Standlee signed up for the event, and lives with her husband on Fort Hood. Standlee spent the first 22 years of her life as an Army brat, so the military life is not new to her. She appreciated the morning of pampering along with the make-and-take activities. Standlee’s husband has been active duty for four years and this is the couple’s first duty station.
“I really enjoyed everything so far,” she said. “This has been great; I’m very thankful they had this for us.”
Mojica said H-E-B will have more activities and events planned for the military community in the future.
