Local Halloween and harvest festivals, activities

By LYNETTE SOWELL

Call them Halloween parties or fall festivals, harvest fests or Hallelujah parties, Saturday’s events will bring out costumed kids of all ages in Copperas Cove.

Saturday morning is dedicated to the dogs with Howl-O-Ween, taking place in City Park from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. Registration begins at 8 a.m.

Howl-O-Ween is a benefit dog walk for three local animal shelters and pet rescues. Five canned food items, at least five pounds of pet food, or other pet items or a cash donation will get dogs and their owners into the event. The first 100 dogs registered will receive a free bandana. This event is hosted by Pre-Teen Miss Rabbit Fest Camryn Brown. Pet rescues and shelters will be on site with animals available for adoption.

Also on Saturday morning at City Park, the Armed Services YMCA will hold its first Y Run For Treats with a one-mile fun run and a 5K. Costumes are “not required but encouraged.” The registration fee is $20 for members, $30 for non-members, $40 for member families and $50 for non-member families. On Saturday, the registration fee goes up by $10 at each level. 50 percent of the profits from the event will go toward the ASYMCA family center’s annual holiday giving. The event kicks off at 8 a.m.

The city will have traditional neighborhood trick or treating hours on Saturday from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

The Haunted Hayride, Cirque du Morl, will be up and running at Ogletree Gap Park on Friday and Saturday night, from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m., with the last trailer heading out at 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $6 per person or $20 for a 4-pack. Tickets can be purchased ahead of time at the Copperas Cove Chamber of Commerce or at the event.

Churches to host events on Saturday

Bountiful New Life Church of God in Christ is hosting a Hallelujah Night starting at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. The church is located at 115 E. Ave. E. The event features games, crafts, candy, food and a non-scary costume contest.

Robertson Avenue Baptist Church is also hosting a Hallelujah Night on Saturday from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

First Baptist Church will host its annual Trunk or Treat from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Saturday, when church members decorate their vehicles and dress up in a variety of themes and distribute candy. The free event also includes a family photo.

The Copperas Cove Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is having a fall festival on Saturday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The church is located at 1502 Virginia Ave.

Frightening events at CTC

Central Texas College is holding a Haunted House and Fall Carnival Friday and Saturday, October 30-31. The haunted house will be held outside the Mayborn Science Theater (Bldg. 152) with games and carnival activities inside. The event is open to the public both days from 6 to 11 p.m. and offers activities for the entire family including games, costume contests and food.

A tour of the haunted house costs $5 per person and the cost of the carnival games starts at 50 cents. Food costs will vary. Each of the rooms in the haunted house has been designed by the campus clubs and organizations. Tickets can be purchased at the door and 10 percent of all proceeds from the event will be donated to the CTC Foundation Scholarship Program. Other proceeds will help fund the campus clubs’ community service projects.

In addition to carnival games, the Mayborn Science Theater will also feature Halloween-themed laser light shows both nights. The show schedule starts at 6 p.m. with “Laser Halloween” followed by “Fright Light” at 7 p.m., “Laser Halloween” at 8 p.m., “Halloween Spooktacular” at 9 p.m. and “Laser Hallow-SCREAM” at 10 p.m. Other carnival activities include a costume contest, karaoke and trivia contests.
