George Duncan, center, congratulates Kirby Lack, left, after results of the Special Election are posted on the old City Hall doors. Lack received the most votes but not enough to claim the election outright, forcing a runoff with Azeita Taylor.

By DAVID MORRIS

With one candidate failing to collect more than 50 percent of the 650 votes cast during the Special election frontrunners Kirby Lack and Azeita Taylor are headed to a runoff vote that will be called for during the August 5 regular meeting of the Copperas Cove City Council. The 650 voters who turned out for the election represent .036 percent of the 17,941 registered voters in Copperas Cove. Lack collected 266 votes (41 percent), with Taylor tabulating 230 (35 percent) and Duncan 154 (24 percent). Lack pulled 208 votes during the two week early voting period, Taylor 176 and Duncan 114 during the same period. Lack again led the pack on Election Day votes collecting 58, four more than Taylor and 18 more than Duncan.
