On Thursday, the Copperas Cove city council held a special meeting during which it took a record vote for a proposed tax rate for 2016.

Councilwoman Marty Smith made a motion to propose the current property tax rate of 79.7908 cents per $100 valuation.

“The current tax rate will enable the city to provide the quailty essential services like fire, police, parks and rec, that the citizens expect and deserve,” Smith said when she made the motion, which was seconded by councilman James Pierce Jr.

Each member present cast a “yes” vote on the roll call, with councilman Dan Yancey being absent.

The council voted to propose the current rate instead of the effective and rollback tax rates that had been presented by the city at Tuesday evening’s workshop.

The proposed effective tax rate was 77.1973 cents per $100 and the rollback tax rate was 77.170 cents per $100.

With the council proposing a tax rate higher than the effective and rollback rates, there must now be two public hearings for the tax rate. Those hearings will be held on August 16 and September 6.
