City hosts reception for new Parks & Rec director

By LYNETTE SOWELL

On Monday morning, the city of Copperas Cove held a brief welcome reception for Joe Brown, the city’s new director of Parks and Recreation. A number of individuals came by, to include business owners, citizens, city staff and elected officials, to spend a few minutes saying hello and introducing themselves. Among those was Wendy Sledd, the public information officer for the Copperas Cove Independent School District. “The school district has a joint partnership with the city, so we do a lot with Parks and Recreation, as you can imagine, with fields and tracks and that kind of thing, so from that perspective we’re very excited to have someone with his experience on board,” said Sledd. She also weighed in from her perspective as the director of the annual Rabbit Fest pageant. “We also have the Rabbit Fest royalty that are heavily involved with Parks and Recreation, so we do a lot, and it’s nice to have someone on board who will include these young people in the community and help them develop the skills and have them give back to the community through Parks and Recreation.” “I think he’s extremely professional. He’s got a great attitude and sense of humor, and I think he will be fabulous for Copperas Cove,” said Marty Smith, city council place 4. “I think he will get a lot of our programs even more so out there. It will be more of a family parks and rec. I’m very impressed with him.“ Copperas Cove chamber of commerce president Betty Price has high hopes for the department as well. She said she knew Brown from when he was in the area before as head of the parks and recreation department for Harker Heights. She looks forward to interacting with him again for future chamber and parks and recreation events. Brown was most recently the director of parks and recreation for the city of Fairview Park, Ohio, where he had been since September 2014. Prior to that, Brown had worked at the same position for Reynoldsburg, Ohio, from December 2012 through September 2014. Brown concludes his second week on the job in Copperas Cove today.
