On Saturday, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9191 in Killeen held their VFW district 14 meeting. The district includes posts from Copperas Cove, Harker Heights, Belton, Temple, Marble Falls, Kempner, Gatesville, Lampasas, Killeen and Burnet. During the meeting the VFW recognized teachers in the community. Every year the VFW recognizes exceptional teachers from elementary, junior high and high schools. These individuals are honored for their outstanding commitment to teaching Americanism and patriotism to their students.

Each year, a classroom elementary, junior high and high school teacher whose curriculum focuses on citizenship education topics—for at least half of the school day in a classroom environment—can be nominated for the Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Award.

This year’s Teacher of the Year recipients all came from the Copperas Cove Independent School District.
