UMHB opens 168th year with convocation

By DAVID MORRIS

The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor celebrated the 168th Fall Convocation service on Wednesday, official opening of the new academic school year at the university. “When we began in Independence, Texas in 1845, there were 24 students who attended the first classes,” University President Dr. Randy O’Rear told the packed Mayborn arena during his remarks. “This week UMHB welcomed our largest freshman class ever, and, by the time we are done counting, we think we will have close to, if not over, 3,700 students on our campus.”
