Tom Boren might have grown up in a town called Littlefield in West Texas, but his family’s Copperas Cove roots go deep.

Now, after 40 years in the insurance business, Boren has taken a step back and entered a time of semi-retirement as of yesterday with the sale of his agency, Western Insurance.

“The only thing changing is that the DBA now reads BCKW DBW Western Insurance, instead of Tom Boren,” he said.

“The best part of this job for me has been the people,” Boren said. “I say, if you don’t like people, don’t get into the insurance business.”

With his love of people, Boren didn’t see himself disappearing from the office altogether, but still plans to come in several days a week.

He will make the commute to Copperas Cove from his home in Pearl, where he and his wife moved several years ago.

“It used to be exactly one mile from my front door to the office here. Now it’s 28 miles,” Boren said.

But he doesn’t mind the drive, he added. Boren’s grandfather was an early Copperas Cove resident—he was born in a home on Robertson Avenue, Boren said—and the family owned a general store in downtown.

The store burned down in 1920, and that gave Boren’s grandfather “a bad taste in his mouth where insurance was concerned,” Boren added.

Boren entered the insurance industry himself after working for several years on Fort Hood as a civilian worker and first opened the doors to Western Insurance in 1976.

Western Insurance will continue to sell and manage insurance policies for personal, auto, home, property, renter, as well as liability insurance. Western is still an affiliate of Germania, and will continue to do business with The Hartford and Travelers Insurance. Western Insurance belongs to the local Chapter 34 of Germania, in business since 1900, the largest chapter in Germania.
