Teal pumpkins mark homes with alternative treats for food allergies

For most children, holidays like Easter, Christmas and Halloween can mean lots of candy, but for four year old Colin Maybury, that same candy can be deadly. Colin has a severe food allergy to peanuts and tree nuts, which was discovered when he suffered anaphylaxis as a toddler after eating a peanut butter sandwich. “He’d had peanuts before, but when he was around 1-1/2 to two years old, I gave him a peanut butter sandwich,” said Mary Maybury, Colin’s mother. “Then I looked back at him and he was turning purple.” After getting help from Copperas Cove EMS, then a formal diagnosis of allergies, the way Maybury family looked at candy-filled holidays and everyday life was turned around.
