High school underclassmen receive awards

Students in the 9th, 10th and 11th grade at Copperas Cove High School were recognized for their hard work and achievements at an held at Lea Ledger Auditorium last Thursday evening.
 
CCHS Choir Director Daniel Montgomery was the emcee for the ceremony.
 
Principal Miguel Timarky called for a moment of silence for Cameron Raine, the freshman student who died after being hit by a car Wednesday morning.
 
“Every kid is our kid,” Timarky said after the moment of silence was over. “It’s very important that we honor and recognize them.”
 
Timarky also applauded and praised the parents of the students and the CCHS counselors and district administration including CCISD Superintendent Dr. Joe Burns.
 
Tiana Byrd, sophomore class president, led the audience in the United States and Texas pledges before the presentation of awards.
 
The awards included Course Awards, which were based on teacher selection for reasons such as Most Improved, Highest Grade, Hardest Worker, Highest Achiever, Most Creative and one award called “Not Letting Being the Youngest Be an Obstacle.” There were also American Citizenship Awards selected by a committee and UIL Academic awards for students who competed in academics at the District and/or Regional level.
 
Before awards were presented, Timarky praised the hard work of the students.
 
“These kids deserve it,” Timarky said. “These kids worked hard. We told our teachers to recognize the kids who worked hard. These kids have definitely shown they can do the work.”
 
Freshmen awards were presented by Assistant Principal Andrea Knighton-West and lead counselor Sherce Hampton. Sophomore awards were presented by Assistant Principal Joe Underwood and counselor Becky Battreal. Junior awards were presented by Assistant Principal Shay Adams and counselor Diane Lovett.
 
After the ceremony, cookies were available out in front of the auditorium and in the lobby.
 
The last day of school for students is June 2, 2016.
