Hettie Halstead Elementary held its annual Sock Hop Friday evening to raise money for United Way.

The fifties-themed dance was held in conjunction with the district wide United Way campaign. Schools throughout CCISD raise money in October for United Way with various fundraisers like dances, festivals and contests between classes.

While only a handful of students took the “Sock Hop” theme to heart swirling their poodle skirts and strutting their greaser style, everyone took the opportunity to get down for a good cause.

Fourth grader Darius Gray said he liked the dances because “They’re awesome.” Isaiah Fant, fifth grader, said his favorite part of the Sock Hop was “the middle part, where they play more Hip Hop.”

The DJ spun tunes from yesteryear like Elvis, as well as current hits the kids were wild to dance to, not to mention staples of any good dance, “The Chicken Dance” and “The Hokey Pokey.” Many of the older kids had the moves to songs like “Wobble Baby” and “The Cupid Shuffle” down, but teachers Leann Kasper, Amber Bottoms, and Lauren Carr were fixtures on the dance floor all evening to help the younger kids through the steps. Third grader Keiki Lani was thrilled to spend the evening “dancing with friends.”

Hettie Halstead Elementary staff said they were pleased with this year’s turn out, raising money with admission and refreshments. The Sock Hop may be over, but there are still numerous opportunities throughout the district to help raise money for United Way.
