Cove HOSA students compete at state contest

32,000 members statewide. 3,075 competing from 400 chapters. Fewer than 20 percent will advance to the next level.

Students from across the state are competing the Health Occupations Students of America State Leadership Conference which opened on Thursday. Four Cove High School HOSA members are competing having defeated the more than 1,000 students at the regional level. Cheyenne Brown captured second place in the Home Health Aid category. She has taken the judges’ comments from the regional contest and tweaked her techniques hoping to take home a first place medal at the state level.

The competition was exciting and shocking at the same time,” Brown said, smiling. “I doubted myself at first, but pulled through in the end.”

Brown competition is a hands-on event where she must be able to flawlessly execute her knowledge of her medical skills.

CCHS HOSA Club President Nicole Huereque will be competing at the state level after acing the Health Care Issues Exam.

I think everyone doubts themselves at a competition like this. All of the other competitors are very knowledgeable,” she said. “

Huereque was one of nearly one hundred students that took the Health Care Issues Exam and with less than half qualifying for the state contest.

HOSA is the largest student organization that prepares students to enter the health care field. Texas HOSA has 32,000 members and is the largest delegation in the US. Also competing this weekend from Copperas Cove are Alexis Grasso in the Medical Assisting. She placed first at the regional conference and hopes for a repeat performance in Galveston Justin Word placed second at regionals demonstrating his Life Support Skills and hope his additional practice will help him qualify for the next level. All competitors must place in the top three of their events to advance to the National Leadership Conference to be held in June at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel in Tennessee. CCHS HOSA is under the advisement of teachers Sandra Perry and Barton Roberts.
