Top athletes push for academic improvement, increase schiolarship potential

Rashard Odomes appears to have it all. The six foot, six inch basketball star at Cove High School has already signed a letter of intent to play for the acclaimed Oklahoma Sooners and will receive a full ride with tuition, books, and fees paid. Yet, the lanky, humble senior ambles into one of the empty classrooms after school each day to study for the SAT and the challenging STAAR test that looms ahead. High school seniors in Texas are required to pass the rigorous exam designed to test knowledge gained before they are permitted to graduate. Failure to graduate eliminates the ability to advance to college with or without a scholarship. For Odomes who has never failed the STAAR and has already taken the SAT with a score strong enough to be accepted by one of the nation’s top universities, it’s all about personal achievement.
