Family, friends honor Cove woman for 100th birthday

By LYNETTE SOWELL

The grand ballroom at Fort Hood’s Phantom Warrior Club was decorated in blue and gold on Saturday night, with the welcome sign outside the ballroom proclaiming “a celebration 100 years in the making.” Approximately 200 attended the event honoring Alither Mae Stephens, who turns 100 years old on Friday. The fourth of five children, Stephens was born on Jan. 15, 1915 in Cassatt, South Carolina and eventually became a resident of Copperas Cove. Stephens moved to Copperas Cove in 2000, to be closer to her grandson, Earnest Sherman (CSM, Ret.), who she helped raise.
